Peter Benfaremo, or Pete, as he is affectionately called by his fans and staff, as been in the ice business since he came out of the army in 1945. His father, once a bricklayer by trade, started the business in the 1944. They used to hand-crank the ice in tubs, but today they do it electrically. Despite some sugar-free varieties, however, the ice recipe remains classic: sugar, water, and flavoring. Pete is a widely known neighborhood character - providing one of life's simplest pleasures. Folks come from all over to get their single-flavored cups of ice. Although the shop continues, Pete Benfaremo died on March 19, 2008, and he is sorely missed. Read more about Pete in "Hidden New York: A Guide to Places that Matter" (Rutgers University Press, 2006).
