Tato Laviera, Miguel Algarin, and Bob Holman stop by and talk to Steve Cannon, founder of the organization, A Gathering of the Tribes. Steve Cannon is a poet, playwright, and novelist who started Tribes in 1991 and in 1993 was given the space, Tribes Gallery, on Third Avenue (between Avenues C & D). Poet and playwright Tato Laviera is one of the early writers of the Nuyorican literary movement and has written many bestselling books of poetry. Inspired by the Puerto Rican declamadores like Juan Boria, his poetry reflects lyricism and rhythmic sensibilities. When his family migrated from Puerto Rico they settled on the Lower East Side so his poetry tends to be written in Spanish, English and Spanglish, reflecting the voice of Loisaida. Bob Holman was MC at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe for many years and the host of the Friday night Poetry Slams. he is credited wth bringing poetry slams to NYC from Chicago, where they originated. He currently owns the Bowery Poetry Cafe.
